Marketing packages

[if IE]> <![endif][if IE]> <![endif]

Marketing are used to benefit films and increase there popularity and profit they will make. Many things help create an effective package and way of marketing the movie. Colour, style , type face , images , props , lighting and make up all help create the desired effect for a product making your products consistent and helping them work together.

Shutter island one of the main trailers I looked into once I decided to do a thriller shows clear examples of this, as does my own project.

In my own project.....

colours

I tried to use colour as a consistent feature in my products. I used a bright vibrant purple to contrast the darker backgrounds but also selected this colour as of the connotations of purple I found in my research. The colour purple has meaning of fantasy and mystery which was something I was going for the colour I choose isn't a soft purple like lilac. Its strong bold and harsh.

I settled on purple when forming my Poster. I initially tried red however through verbal feedback and my own decision it gave the wrong meaning. Coming across more as gore and horror which isn't the impression or meaning I wanted the audience to take. Throughout the trailer there isn't much blood or red symbolism so it doesn't have that link. Whereas the purple can link to the dark skies ect as well as linking to the costume choice of the antagonist having purple boots which appear twice in the trailer. It has also been used on other movie poster before the black and white with the bright red colour scheme and I wanted something unique, recognisable and something people will remember. I think purple was the right choice. I kept purple consistent through the trailer. All the text ( bar production logos ) are purple and in the same font as I believe this helps create a stronger link between my products. The main reason for this choice would be how it would effect the audience first impression of the movie and its genre. My main aim in using colour was to make sure that people formed the right idea about the genre and themes and from feedback I have gathered I used it effectively.

Here shows the final product and when I was testing the colour red with a place holder.

As soon as I decided on doing a psychological thriller I had an idea for the photography I use for my poster and magazine. I decided to use 2 medium close ups. I found this was common with thriller posters but not as common in magazine covers. However the use and meaning behind the medium close ups was a large reason I choose to use the instead of following very closely to conventions. The film and trailer its self show elements of mystery. Body langue and facial expression are huge in telling the audience about a person and that's why I tried something rather neutral to try and with hold this way of forming a logical opinion of someone that in its self creates this lack of trust between the character and viewer. The strong eye contact makes this unsettling connection. So I used this to portray my themes and genre highlighting the psychological side to my genre.

Image is used in my trailer to create a sense of story, I used a range of props and locations to add dimension to the shots. It gave brief information on past present and future of characters while still being vague. The poster and magazine images is meant to have the same obscure amount of meaning to puzzle and challenge the audience.

style

A stylistic choice I made to benefit my branding and marketing was the font. Although in the poster and trailer they weren't identical however had the same meaning. I picked fonts which looked like messy hand writing. Something maybe scratched into a surface of written by shaking hands this obscurity is meant to give a personal feel and away to link to the character who may have wrote its stability or mental state. This is used in my products in the same colour to make it consistent and a recognisable feature to my product.

Another style choice I made was to add effect to images and text. The film is called imitation so I tried to add an effect of trying to become something your not like impersonation so using an effect which triples images and text was a way of expressing that copying of a main aspect. The overall look of it also makes a blurry unclear image of things which adds to the theme of mystery around my products.

The magazine follows a different font but has the same double effect using a low opacity on the back version to make it seem like a copy or even a subtle background such as the text ghosting the main text.

costume and make up

Costume and make up have a large impact on the themes and genre the trailer and photography conveys which needs to be shown in marketing to reach the right audience. my products need to be consistent as costume tells people a lot about characters having an on going style and meaning to a characters costume makes people understand them better and view them in a way which makes them interested in the character and how they benefit the product corresponding to there interpretations of the genre.

Both of the main protagonists have there own style which we see , there clothes are used to create atmosphere and represent there emotions such as the dark clothes they where when mourning. This link to emotion helps highlight and represent themes such as isolation.

Clothes and make up are also used to bring across the theme of identity as this is a personal thing to a character which they can change. n example of this is the main character best friend who goes missing we see her s originally and unique in her sense of clothe s and wears make up as shown in her missing poster this can be used to show her knowledge of her own identify as she is the only character who stays to her view point where as the protagonist changes her opinion and gets easily swayed. corresponding to this we see the antagonist put make up on and even try to pull it off her self as she tries to change her identity highlighting the crisis she is going through. The audience don't need to develop there idea of costume the same but it constructs the products to make the meaning of the genre and themes which are key selling points and need to be highlighted to attract an audience and make a a profit.

Make up

The first image shows the every day make up look compared the make up worn in the antagonists mental break down. Both show there individuality and conscious state of mind.

Clothing

The first image shows a the protagonist crying. The grey is meant to express the negative emotions.

The second image is just to show the characters personailty

The dark clothes in the third screen shot are there to show evil and darkness with there personalty or bad choices there making.

These links and representations help the products meet a standard where you gain information which is key to the attraction of the movie and spikes interest in watching it

The consistency and how the products complement each other make it an overall stronger marketing package and i believe as of the many feature and techniques used it works well and professionally.
